PictureLion:   panthera leo

PictureThe lion has long been called the king of the jungle.  The male, with his huge mane of hair looks truely regal.  The little chap on the right though, has a long way to go.  Of all the big cats on earth the Lion is the only one that lives in a family group.  This group is called a pride.

Picture

The picture on the right shows the female lion, or lioness with a cub of a few weeks old.   She does not have the mane that the male has.   A pride of lions will normally consist of a lead adult male and any number of females, juveniles and cubs.  Whilst the male will protect his pride with all his strenght,

it is the lionesses of the pride that do all the hunting.  When the hunt is over and the hard work done, the male strolls over to take first turn in feeding.  When he has eaten his fill the rest of the pride can squabble over what is left.  The king of the jungle is quite lazy.
Below left, you can see how the lioness carries her cubs.  She will only carry one at the time and this does not hurt the cubs.  Quite what is happening with the cub on the right I don’t know.  Is it getting a telling off, or is it looking for food bits in the lionesses mouth?  Is the lioness telling the cub something?

Lions are to be found throughout most of central and southern Africa.  They are carnivours (meat eaters), and like all big cats only kill to eat.  They are not classed as an endangered species.   They breed so well in captivity that zoos have to stop them breeding as there is no place for all the new cubs.  The lion has become a successful survivor so the king of the jungle should remain with us for a long time.
